China approved 16 “Three-New Foods” Approved by National Health Commission

On May 27, 2026, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) issued Announcement No. 5 of 2026, approving 16 new “Three-New Foods” items.

These include seven new food ingredients:

  • Peony Seed Oil, produced from the kernels of Paeonia ostii and Paeonia rockii.
  • Ampelopsis grossedentata Leaf Polyphenols, produced from the leaves of Ampelopsis grossedentata.
  • Cyclocarya paliurus Leaf Polyphenols, produced from the leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus.
  • Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis XLTG11, isolated from the intestinal tract of healthy children.
  • Fusarium compactum Protein, produced through fermentation using the Fusarium compactum MM-135 strain.
  • Chlorella pyrenoidosa Protein, produced from Chlorella pyrenoidosa, heterotrophic Chlorella pyrenoidosa, or yellow Chlorella pyrenoidosa strains obtained through physical mutagenesis screening.
  • Phytosterols, produced from soybean oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, sunflower seed oil, and tall oil.

Seven new food additive varieties were also approved:

  • Xylanase, a food industrial enzyme preparation derived from a new production microorganism.
  • Cellulase, a food industrial enzyme preparation derived from a new production microorganism.
  • Calcium Alginate, with an expanded scope of use for processed cheese and cheese products, chocolate and chocolate products, cocoa products excluding category 05.01.01 (food category 05.01.02), and puffed foods.
  • Calcium 6S-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, with an expanded scope of use for foods for special dietary uses other than categories 13.01–13.04, limited to complementary food nutritional supplements.
  • 2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL), approved as a nutrient fortifier derived from a new production microorganism.
  • 3’-Sialyllactose Sodium Salt (3’-SL), approved as a nutrient fortifier derived from a new production microorganism.
  • Lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT), approved as a nutrient fortifier derived from a new production microorganism.

In addition, two new food-related product varieties were approved:

  • Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Homopolymer (EVOH), with an expanded scope of use for adhesives intended for indirect contact with all food categories.
  • Calcium tert-Butylphosphonate, approved as an additive for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) plastic materials and articles intended for food contact use.
